Good Land Organics goes to Portland

This past weekend, the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) met in Portland, OR for ‘The Coffee Event of the Year’.  People from every part of the industry, from all over the world, met to discuss new trends, technologies, and compete for having the best grown and brewed coffee.  This year, there were over 8,000 registered attendees, and over 700 booths representing their businesses.

It is a well known belief, or ‘rule’, that all good coffee is produced between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Tropic of Cancer: also known as the ‘coffee belt’.  It’s safe to say that every single coffee grower at the convention was from a country that lies between these latitudinal lines: with the exception of one.

Good Land Organics, the only coffee producing farm in the contiguous US, sent new employee, Lindsey McManus, to scope the scene.  It was the intention to merely speak to a few key people, attend a few lectures and get a feel for the upcoming trends.  Exploring the local cafes was also on the ‘to-do’ list, as Portland has an abundance of local roasters and one of the most active cafe scenes in the US.  As one of the most coffee savvy cities in the nation, most locals and the 12,000 plus attendees, although from different parts of the world, all spoke a common language: coffee.

It seemed that with each mention of California grown coffee, the eyes and ears of those listening stood in attention.  It has been a rumor around the industry of such a thing, but virtually no one has had the chance to try it themselves.  Being ahead of the trends and the industry’s inherently competitive nature, could potentially bring a large amount of attention onto California grown coffee in the upcoming months.

With what began as merely research, coffee production on this California organic fruit farm has now progressed to showing some promise.  This year will mark a very important milestone for the project’s development. It is exciting times for this farm but also the entire US.  Should production prove to be successful, it will cause a complete shift in the industry’s understanding of coffee production.

With hope, what is found in the cup's flavor and experience will be well received.  But, at the very least, Good Land Organics gets huge kudos from the industry for producing high yields and healthy trees on California soil.
